In Lord Shadow's House, part 2

In Lord Shadow’s House part 2, read part one here

“It is a good morning, my dear lady,” the man answered with a smile in his voice. “A very good morning, indeed.”

“And why should you be smiling so?” Bridget asked. “It has been a fortnight at least since I poured for you.”

“Aye, that is has,” he answered. “But my lady must forgive me, if she knew what it was that kept me from her…delicious coffee.”

She smirked. “I would not be so sure of that. Besides, how are you to know that I didn’t just give your coffee to someone else?”

The man’s face went ashen. “Not you as well,” he whispered.

“Next!” Bridget called out loudly, looking past the man who stood frozen in front of her. The line moved forward as if he wasn’t there.

Jarius waited patiently until it was his turn to stand beside the great lady. He breathed in deeply, hoping for grand and eloquent words to come into his mouth, but instead he only lifted his mug, as he did every other day.

Neither was paying attention to the man who was intently watching them. Jarius stood idle as Bridget took his mug and filled it in her normal fashion. A large part of him, a part growing bigger by the instant, was angry with her that she was making this so hard on him. Surely she must know the life they were to have together; it had been lived countless times.

The great lady handed Jarius his mug, filled to the brim with rich, nutty warmness, and said the words that usually made him a bit fuzzy in the head and a bit weak in the knees.

“Good morning to you, sir,” she said and nothing more.

  1. Poor guy! I want to know about the one watching them. He could sure use divine intervention right now.

  3. I'm going to go in the opposite direction and say that Jarius sounds kind of creepy right now. Of course the other guy isn't any better.
