Observant.

Most of the books I’ve read, and have written, have the MC being amazingly observant. I know why we do it- how else would we get across all those juicy details? But is it real?
How many of us have the observational skills of Sherlock Holmes?
Even though I pride myself on being a people watcher, I know I miss way more than I catch. To get around this, I usually have two MCs, which, I feel, help the story stay authentic and real while at the same time propelling it forward. It even gives the opportunity for some misunderstandings, which always helps with the tension level. But that’s just me; for some reason I have to keep it as real as possible. I think that’s because, in my own mind, it is.

  1. Great post. Yes, we do miss things but in writing or reading a piece we'd like to know all the small details, how odd is that?

    1. Maybe that's why. Isn't that what writing is? An escape from reality.

  2. Hi Melanie,
I am so glad to be here, via this year's a to z blog challenge
good posts here I appreciate your ability to put it together in
a systematic way but sad to say that the visitors who come here will definitely ran away from this place due to the brightness given at your fonts/letters white letter with black ground will irritates the eyes and one cannot continue reading for quiet some time so, if you want more readers and comment pl do change the template and font color, provide a pleasant color
    Best
PS Also please embed the a to z log at your blogs sidebar so that others will know that you are a participant and also people can jump in there LOL
    Bye

  3. You're right, we do like to have one character that is pretty observant, it's a good way of communicating to the reader what's going on with the scene. But what's funny, is that in real life, I'm terrible when it comes to people watching. I'm so much in my head, prancing in my own little universe, that it could start raining hippos and lollipops and I'd totally miss it. I have to consciously tell myself, "Ok, now pay attention to the real world . . . " (:

    1. I know, I've been married for seventeen years and I'm just now beginning to figure my husband out, but my characters usually have each other down in a few weeks.

  4. Stopping in from A to Z Challenge. First year participating.

I always tell my stories from a third person perspective to avoid that issue. Then the MC is free to be as smart, dumb or self-absorbed as I want him to be.

    1. Very good point. For some reason I've never written in third.
