Today is the first Wednesday
of the month, which makes it IWSG time. Thanks to Alex Cavanaugh and co-hosts
for putting this on each month. It’s a wonderful community of writers who are
also humans. We make mistakes. We’re insecure. This month I’m more sad than insecure. I’ll be
finishing my Newstead series, which
means saying good-bye to some characters who have become a major part of my
life. It feels timely though, five years ago tomorrow is when I started this
venture; it feels right that it should end now.
Do any of you have problems with that-with saying good-bye?
It felt odd to end my series, but I knew the time was right. Better than continuing with it when it just wasn't viable anymore.
ReplyDeleteI do understand that completely. I usually have another project waiting my attention which helps but my one series remains my all time favorite.

I haven't gotten to the point where I need to say goodbye yet. I'm still working on the first book. I suspect that when my series is over, I'll probably be more than glad to say goodbye and make some new friends.
ReplyDeleteI listened to an online interview done with Sophie Kinsella once; she wrote that she didn't want to say goodbye to the main character of her Shopaholic novel, which is why she ended up creating a series for her and the other characters. It is hard letting go of the characters, especially since they've occupied a significant space in your mind and your heart while you've been writing about them.
ReplyDeleteI can understand why you feel sad, like you're saying goodbye to your characters. But now you've polished them up and put them in the spotlight. Try to sit back and admire them if you can.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on creating characters that you loved and grew enough for a series. I am sure it is hard to say good-bye. Remember how much fun it is falling in love with new characters! That may help ease the pain.
ReplyDeleteI have difficulties every time I finish a book, when it's time to write another and I still am in love with the one that came out, oh say a year ago? It's always hard for me to say goodbye to those characters and story and themes and move on.
ReplyDeleteI haven't stuck with a series that long, but I could imagine that would be tough! I just finished the fourth and last (under contract) in my Piper Morgan series...but I know I'll be spending the next six months or so with those characters as I revise and revise and revise some more! So it's never really goodbye until those "last pass pages" are turned in! And then there's promoting it...which means discussing it and revisiting it many times for a month or so.
