Today’s the first Wednesday
of the month, which makes it IWSG time. Thanks to Alex J. Cavanaugh and
co-hosts for putting this on each month. Basically, it’s a time for writers to
vent and support each other in their venting. Feel like joining in? You can. Sign
up here .
Last month, as most
of you know, my husband and I started a new venture with Black and White
editing, and with anything new comes insecurities. Will people come? Will they
like what we do for them? I don’t know; which is one of the main reasons we
decided to do the first five pages for free as a way for people to try us out. We’re
not talking about detailing people’s cars here. It’s their stories, their
deepest dreams. I want them to be happy. I need
them to be happy, and if it’s not with us, that’s okay.
On the writerly side
of things, everything is going well. I love my current WIP (Bloodbrothers). It’s
nearing completion; hopefully to be released sometime in September, which has
been my goal all along. September marks five years from when I started writing
Newstead; it only seems fitting that the series should be completed then. The
illustrator just submitted the cover and I LOVE it. Steven makes an appearance
on this one, and he captured him perfectly. That’s about it for me, what’s
going on with all of you?
Have a great first
week of August.

If your goal is for people to be happy with your services, then you will do fine.
ReplyDeleteIt's been a while since I stopped in...probably from back before my baby blogging break, so HI!!! I think the sample pages are pretty standard. I would never use a service without a sample. In an editor, you want someone who connects with your work/style, not just someone who knows how to edit. I'm wishing you huge success and way to take the plunge!
ReplyDeleteDoing this first 5 pages for free is a great idea! I'm excited to hear more about Bloodbrothers.
ReplyDeleteThank you for signing up for my newsletter! :)
Good luck with your editing project. I've no doubt you will make your customers happy!
ReplyDeleteI hope the editing project works out. It's a vital service for writers. Congrats on the WIP.

Isn't it great to love your WIP. Can't be insecure about that.
ReplyDeleteYou'll do well if you strive to make people happy. :) Congratulations on the WIP and good luck!
ReplyDeleteHey, what happened to my earlier comment? Bummer...
ReplyDeleteReleasing it around the five year mark would be really cool.
Just be careful that short story writers don't try to get edits for free because of your five-page-promise. Are you going to add a page (tab) to this blog about your editng services? Couldn't hurt.
ReplyDeleteI'm actually okay with that--more experience and exposure for me and editing work done for them. It's a win-win.
DeleteBest of luck with your venture! I think the name of your business is very clever.
ReplyDeleteGood luck.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the progress you've made. Will you be doing a cover reveal so we can all admire it soon?
ReplyDeleteHope to soon!
DeleteI think editing the first five pages for free sounds like a great idea! People can get a feel for your editing style and if they like it, they will definitely be back for more—win!
ReplyDeleteAnd that's exciting that you'll be finished with Bloodbrothers soon. Congrats! :)
Congratulations on all you're doing! That's awesome that you started a business. I run my own freelance writing business with a slate of clients. I started out writing for about $.01 a word and worked my way up. It's a lot of work but very rewarding. Now that I sometimes hire bookmark designers (usually on Elance), I've realized that reliable, talented freelancers are VERY hard to find...if you're reliable and good, you'll do well!
ReplyDeleteI hope your new venture is going well in its infancy. So exciting!
